Guwahati, May 4 (PTI) AJP’s greenhorn candidate Kunki Chowdhury, who shot to limelight after Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma threatened of legal action against her parents over alleged beef consumption, was trailing behind BJP veteran Vijay Kumar Gupta in Guwahati Central constituency, according to the Election Commission.
As per official data, Gupta has received 16,892 votes compared to 9,524 votes of Chowdhury, leading the contest by 7,368 votes at the end of the third round of counting.
During election campaigning, 27-year-old Chowdhury found herself at the centre of a charged controversy, with Sarma threatening with a police case against her parents over alleged beef consumption, support for Pakistan and hurting the sentiments of ‘Sanatani’ people, even as she dismissed the attacks as baseless.
She is Assam Jatiya Parishad’s youngest candidate for the 2026 assembly polls, contesting the newly carved Guwahati Central seat against 70-year-old Gupta.
With no prior experience in party work, AJP approached her to represent the “younger voice” in the Congress-led six-party opposition alliance.
One of only 59 women among 722 candidates in Assam, Chowdhury framed the race as “continuity versus change”. Her entry turned Guwahati Central into a generational contest, watched as a test of youth influence in Assam politics. PTI TR TR ACD
