Guwahati, Aug 28 (PTI) Five Congress members have submitted applications seeking party tickets to contest the by-election to the Nagaon Lok Sabha constituency in Assam, party sources said on Friday.

Those who submitted their applications are former MLAs Sibamoni Bora and Durlav Chamua, besides Imdad Hussain, Maidul Islam Khan and Ranjit Barman.

The by-election has been necessitated by the resignation of former Lok Sabha MP Pradyut Bordoloi, who joined the BJP in March, ahead of the Assembly elections in the state held in April.

The deadline for submitting applications ended on Friday.

Along with the application forms, the aspiring contestants also submitted a non-refundable demand draft of Rs 1 lakh in favour of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee and a certified copy of the electoral rolls bearing their names to the party’s treasurer.

The date for the bypoll is yet to be announced by the Election Commission. PTI DG DG MNB

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
