Guwahati, Oct 21 (PTI) Assam-based entrepreneur Jahnabi Phookan, founder of Lahé Looms, has been named among the winners of this year’s Meaningful Business 100 (MB100), an annual programme recognising leaders who combine profit with purpose to deliver scalable solutions to complex challenges.

A panel of expert judges from organisations including the Gates Foundation, Google, IBM, Saïd Business School, Seedstars Capital and the World Economic Forum selected the winners from more than 900 nominations, a press release said on Wednesday.

The nominees, comprising social entrepreneurs, sustainability leaders, corporate CEOs and impact investors, were evaluated across five key areas — equity, impact, innovation, leadership and scalability.

Meaningful Business founder and CEO Tom Lytton-Dickie congratulated Phookan, saying her work at Lahé Looms demonstrated how scalable business models and technology could deliver tangible, positive impact.

“This year’s cohort is a powerful reminder of the progress that is being made around the world, and their success is critical to building a more sustainable future. We’re delighted to welcome Jahnabi into the global MB100 community and look forward to supporting their work in the years ahead,” he said.

The MB100 programme, now in its 8th year, connects winners to a global peer network, alongside capacity-building resources and pro bono support, delivered in collaboration with industry-leading organisations, including EY, Hogan Lovells Cadwalader, Forster Communications, Northeastern University and The Portman Estate.

Phookan is the founder of Lahé Looms and a tourism entrepreneur with over three decades of experience showcasing Assam and Northeast India.

Through Lahé Looms, she champions Assam’s handloom and sericulture heritage, creating sustainable livelihoods for women artisans through a farm-to-fashion model.

They work across the value chain, from sourcing locally produced silk and supporting weaving communities to designing and selling contemporary handwoven apparel and textiles rooted in Assamese craft traditions.

She is also the co-founder and director of Jungle Travels India and Assam Bengal Navigation Company, and has served as National President of FLO (FICCI Ladies Organisation) in 2020-21. PTI DG DG MNB

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
