Silchar (Assam), Sep 30 (PTI) Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday said road, rail and air communication with Barak Valley was being ramped up, and that the improved connectivity will lead to a transformation of the entire southern region of the state.
He called for people’s support in taking forward the momentum of development by voting for BJP-led NDA candidates in Silchar Municipal Corporation (SMC) elections, scheduled for Saturday.
Addressing a campaign meeting here, Sarma said the BJP has already won two seats uncontested and appealed for support from the public to pocket the remaining 40 as well.
“BJP would have anyway won 30-35 seats. But I urge your support in ensuring that it is a clean sweep for us,” he said.
The chief minister said Barak Valley was witnessing unprecedented changes with focus on improving connectivity.
A super-express corridor from Silchar to Siliguri via Guwahati, a new railway line bypassing Dima Hasao district to provide uninterrupted train connectivity and a greenfield airport at Doloo will lead to a complete overhaul of the communication network to the southern part of Assam, he added.
“Once connectivity is improved, automatic transformation will happen,” Sarma asserted.
Sarma said he had predicted before the assembly elections in April that the NDA will hit a century in the number of seats it wins, and the ruling alliance retained power with 102 seats in its kitty out of a total of 126 constituencies.
“We will work in such a manner in the next five years that in the 2031 assembly elections, all 126 seats will be ours,” he asserted.
Pledging to work for mitigating problems in Silchar, the chief minister announced that separate funds will be allotted for the SMC by the state government so that it can carry out minor works on its own.
He promised of better roads, a drinking water project, installation of CCTV cameras and controlling crime in the SMC area, if the NDA comes to power in the civic body.
“We will fulfill all our promises, and I can assure you of development and good governance,” Sarma added.
Polling for SMC elections is scheduled from 7.30 am to 4 pm on October 3, and counting of votes will be held on October 6. PTI SSG SSG ACD
