Dibrugarh (Assam), Jul 24 (PTI) Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma laid foundation stones for various projects worth more than Rs 500 crore in Dibrugarh on Thursday.
In the first programme, Sarma laid the foundation stone for the infrastructure upgradation of Dibrugarh University under the Chief Minister’s Special Grant and Pradhan Mantri Uchhatar Shiksha Abhiyan (PM-USHA), worth Rs 146.43 crore.
“Dibrugarh University, an epicentre of learning, is headed towards the next phase of its growth as it adds more facilities for students. Today, I am initiating work on several important projects,” he said.
Under the chief minister’s special grant, the university will develop a hostel for girls, repair internal roads, construct Type-IV housing units, a sports complex and upgrade the gymnasium.
The girls’ hostel, academic building, research centre, incubation centre, library and computer lab will be modernised and developed under the PM-USHA scheme.
“Once completed, the projects will further enhance the university’s academic environment and provide a positive boost to students’ overall development,” Sarma said.
These projects aim to modernise and expand the university’s infrastructure to support academic, research and extracurricular growth, he added.
In the second function, the CM laid the foundation stone for teachers’ quarters and a students’ hostel at Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) here.
The project, spread across 594 bighas or more than 196 acres of land, entails an investment of Rs 357 crore, he said.
“Upgrading the AMCH and adding facilities was a key promise of our government. I am happy to begin the work on the hostel and quarters as promised,” Sarma said.
Later in the day, the CM is scheduled to attend another function at Naharkatia for the foundation stone laying and handing over ceremony of key projects, worth Rs 130 crore.
The projects include Co-District Commissioner’s Office, Namrup-Naharkatia road overbridge, Naharkatia Higher Secondary School building, Konwarigaon High School building, a hockey stadium and Tata Centre of Excellence at ITI Naharkatia.
Sarma will also hand over the ITI Naharkatia to the skill, employment and entrepreneurship department. PTI TR SBN TR SBN
