Stay updated with ThePrint:

Guwahati, Nov 5 (PTI) Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday paid tributes to legendary singer Bhupen Hazarika, saying his contribution to the state’s cultural landscape was unparalleled.

Hazarika, popularly known as the Bard of Brahmaputra, died in 2011 in Mumbai. He was conferred India’s highest civilian award, Bharat Ratna, posthumously in 2019.

In a post on X, the chief minister said, “Dr Bhupen Hazarika — a name that echoes through every household in Assam and beyond. The Bharat Ratna awardee’s contribution to Assam’s cultural landscape is unparalleled, and we are fortunate to have witnessed his performances live.”

“On this occasion (of Hazarika’s death anniversary) today, I pay my tributes to the Sudhakantha, whose legacy we will always cherish,” Sarma added.

The year-long birth centenary celebration of the musical maestro began on September 8, 2025 and is scheduled to conclude on November 29 in New Delhi in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. PTI DG NSD
