Guwahati, Sep 5 (PTI) Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya on Saturday felicitated 95-year-old Prafulla Kumar Borthakur, the senior-most retired primary school teacher of the state, on the occasion of National Teachers’ Day.
The oldest primary school teachers of different districts were feted at their respective places of residence under an initiative of the governor, while the state government also honoured 15 teachers at the central function on the occasion.
Acharya felicitated Borthakur at his residence in Jamugurihat in Sonitpur district as part of the ‘Governor Assam Varishtha Shikshak Samman’ initiative, under which district commissioners honoured the oldest retired primary school teacher in their respective districts, a Lok Bhavan release said.
Speaking on the occasion, Acharya highlighted the invaluable contributions of teachers in shaping generations and strengthening the intellectual and social fabric of the nation.
He said that respecting and honouring teachers has always been an integral part of India’s rich heritage and tradition.
Referring to Borthakur’s long journey as an educator, the governor said he had witnessed the transformation of several generations and that the values, knowledge and confidence imparted by him have left an enduring impression on the lives of his students.
Acharya also lauded the teachers for their contributions to various public initiatives and responsibilities, even as they continue to discharge their primary duty of shaping and educating future generations.
Similar felicitation programmes were organised across the state at the district and elementary education block levels to felicitate senior-most retired elementary education teachers, the release said.
At the district level, 35 senior-most retired primary teachers were felicitated at their respective homes, while at the Elementary Education Block level, 113 former teachers received the honours.
Meanwhile, 15 teachers were felicitated with state awards in the presence of state Education Minister Ranoj Pegu, an official statement said.
Moreover, 12 colleges that received autonomous status from the University Grants Commission, 14 Associate NCC Officers under the Directorate of Higher Education, four teachers who obtained patents under the Directorate of Technical Education, and five teachers under the Adarsha Vidyalaya Sangathan, Assam, were also felicitated.
Speaking on the occasion, Pegu said the role of a teacher was not confined to being the guide of a student’s life alone, but they were among the forces that build a healthy, educated, disciplined and value-based society.
He exhorted the teachers to adapt and use emerging technology to improve their teaching methods, as he also emphasised their role in making the education sector more innovative, skill-based and student-centric. PTI SSG SSG ACD
