Guwahati: A 16-year-old girl, who was allegedly raped and murdered in Assam’s Bongaigaon district last month, posthumously secured the first division in her Class 10 examinations, results of which were declared Saturday.

The girl had gone missing after her exams ended on 4 March. Her parents subsequently lodged a missing persons complaint on 5 March, after which her body was located near the New Bongaigaon Railway Market on the night of 8 March.

The killing had triggered protests in Bongaigaon town. On 10 March, residents blocked roads and rail tracks for many hours, demanding justice and a thorough investigation.

Later that night, Assam Police arrested the main accused from a hideout in the district. The accused allegedly abducted the girl and held her captive before she was raped and murdered. Police also suspect that the minor was sexually assaulted by accomplices of the main accused, who is currently in judicial custody.

Assam Director General of Police (DGP) G.P. Singh confirmed to ThePrint that the investigation had been transferred to CID, “considering the sensitivity of the case.” Singh said he was “hopeful that the investigation team would reach a conclusion in due course”.

Soon after the declaration of results, the girl’s parents reached out to child rights activist Miguel Das, who has been helping the family get justice.

Das told ThePrint that the girl aspired to become a police officer. Narrating the conversation with her parents, he said they want justice for the child.

“This brilliant child had so many aspirations, and unfulfilled dreams. She wanted to be a cop with the Assam Police. However, in a society that is rife with criminals , dreams of children are crushed every single day,” said Das, adding that he would do all in his capacity to ensure that the accused is not let out of jail.

He also took to Twitter to convey the girl’s exam results.

A total of 1,05,873 students secured first division in the Class 10 exams conducted by the Secondary Education Board of Assam (SEBA). The overall passing percentage was 75.7 percent — 74.41 percent among girl students and for 77.28 percent among boys.
