Gangtok, Aug 17 (PTI) The Indian Army’s Trishakti Corps has commissioned a modern sewage treatment plant (STP) in Sikkim’s Changu at 12,313 ft, marking a significant step towards protecting the fragile high-altitude ecosystem around the revered Tsomgo Lake.
A statement from the Army on Monday said that the facility uses indigenous technology developed by the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC).
The Army said that the STP will ensure effective treatment of sewage and help protect vital water resources in an ecologically sensitive area. The use of home-grown technology also underlines the practical application of Indian scientific innovation in addressing environmental challenges in difficult terrain.
Tsomgo Lake, popularly known as Changu Lake, holds deep cultural and religious significance for the people of Sikkim. It is also a popular tourist destination in the state. The new facility is expected to help reduce the impact of wastewater on the lake and its surrounding ecosystem.
“Environmental stewardship and respect for local traditions are integral to our commitment to the people of the region. By combining indigenous technology with community partnership, this facility will help safeguard water resources and preserve the environment for future generations,” a senior Army official said.
