Amaravati, Apr 29 (PTI) Andhra Pradesh Special Chief Secretary for Energy K Vijayanand on Wednesday directed officials to implement a comprehensive action plan to ensure uninterrupted power supply during peak summer months amid rising electricity demand.

He also noted that the state is witnessing a sharp increase in power consumption, with daily demand reaching around 275 Million Units (MU), and stressed the need for advance planning to manage supply efficiently until the monsoon.

“Officials should prepare a robust contingency framework to ensure uninterrupted, secure, and reliable 24×7 power supply across all sectors during peak summer,” Vijayanand said in a official release.

He said in coming months — May, June and July — it would be critical due to rising temperatures and possible El Niño impact, which could further strain power demand and supply conditions.

El Niño is a climate pattern characterised by the unusual warming of surface waters in the eastern tropical Pacific Ocean, which disrupts global weather patterns.

Directing officials of Andhra Pradesh Transmission Corporation (APTRANSCO) and Distribution Companies (DISCOMs) to coordinate closely, Vijayanand emphasised the importance of maintaining system reliability and quality power supply during peak load conditions.

He also stressed the need for stakeholders to work in coordination to ensure seamless power management in line with the government’s priorities.

Meanwhile, during a separate review meeting, Vijayanand assessed the progress of ongoing projects under the Andhra Pradesh Power Generation Corporation Limited (APGENCO)-National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) joint venture and called for expediting clearances and tender processes to ensure timely execution.

He instructed officials to identify new projects in coordination with the Water Resources Department (WRD) and New and Renewable Energy Development Corporation of Andhra Pradesh (NREDCAP), while also focusing on developing solar power plants to support proposed pumped storage projects.

Further, he directed officials to resolve pending issues related to the Gadikota and Rajupalem pumped storage projects in coordination with the Forest Department. PTI MS KH
