Amaravati, Oct 10 (PTI) The Andhra Pradesh Cabinet on Saturday finalised reservation for BCs in local bodies elections, based on the Rajiv Ranjan Commission report.

Addressing a press conference at the Secretariat after the Cabinet meeting, Agriculture Minister K Atchannaidu said BCs will receive a reservation of 26.73 percent in the gram panchayat ward member posts.

“The coalition government’s primary goal is to do social justice and give deserving political representation to BCs… 26.73 percent (reservation will be given for BCs) in gram panchayat ward member posts,” said the minister.

Further, he said BCs would receive 27.95 percent reservation in gram panchayat sarpanch posts, followed by 25.55 percent in Mandal Parishad Territorial Constituencies, and 24.6 percent each in Mandal Parishad Presidents and Zilla Parishad Territorial Constituencies.

The reservation for BCs would be 23.08 percent in Zilla Parishad chairperson posts, 32.78 percent for urban local bodies ward member posts, 33.02 percent for municipal chairperson posts and mayors (35.29 percent), he added.

The TDP-led government’s decision comes a day after the Supreme Court scrapped its earlier decision to extend 34 per cent reservations for BCs in local bodies.

Meanwhile, state Health Minister Satya Kumar Yadav accused YSRCP supremo Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy of “slashing” reservation to BCs to 24 percent from 34 per cent.

“At a time when Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu is steadfastly striving to empower BCs, YSRCP is conspiring to hinder those efforts and delay local bodies polls,” Yadav said.

The minister said that any delay in holding the polls will affect the flow of the 16th Finance Commission funds. PTI STH ROH

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
