Pune, Jun 20 (PTI) Amid chants of ‘Jai Hari Vitthal’ and ‘Dnyanoba Mauli Tukaram’ and playing of traditional instruments, the annual ‘palkhi’ (palanquin) processions of Sant Tukaram Maharaj and Sant Dnyaneshwar Maharaj with thousands of ‘warkaris’ or devotees of Lord Vitthal reached Pune city amid intermittent rains on Friday evening.
The palanquins of Sant Tukaram Maharaj and Sant Dnyaneshwar Maharaj received a warm welcome, with those in attendance including Pune municipal corporation commissioner Naval Kishor Ram and Pune police commissioner Amitesh Kumar.
The footprints of Sant Dnyaneshwar Maharaj were taken out from Alandi on Thursday in a palanquin decorated with flowers as part of ‘wari’, the annual pilgrimage to the renowned Lord Vitthal temple in Pandharpur in Solapur district, 225 kilometres away from here.
Both the palkhis will halt in the city for the night and will proceed onward on Sunday morning.
The processions from Pune and other parts of the state will reach Pandharpur on July 6, which is ‘Ashadhi Ekadashi’ as per the Hindu calendar. PTI SPK BNM
