Mau (UP), Jun 19 (PTI) Samajwadi Party (SP) president Akhilesh Yadav on Friday demanded police action against “criminal elements” who disrupted a railway programme here and alleged a growing influence of “inter-state mafias” in the state.
In a post on X, Yadav alleged that the BJP government was bringing criminals from outside the state to Uttar Pradesh and creating an atmosphere of fear.
“The Mau-Anand Vihar train service was started due to the efforts of SP MP Rajeev Rai in public interest, but the inauguration programme was deliberately made tense,” Yadav said.
“Those involved be identified through AI-based verification and booked,” he said, alleging that they were “history-sheeters” roaming freely.
He said the issue was a “challenge” for Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and alleged that Uttar Pradesh had become a “safe haven” for inter-state mafias.
He warned that if no action was taken, it would be assumed that the incident had government backing.
Rai on X alleged that despite the chief minister speaking against criminals and mafias, no action was taken against the offenders in Mau due to political influence.
Rai alleged that on Friday’s railway event, certain people misbehaved with him, women and police. He alleged that the same people had earlier been involved in violence.
The allegations came hours after a railway inauguration programme in Mau turned into a political face-off, with Rai objecting to a remark made by Uttar Pradesh Energy Minister A K Sharma and briefly leaving his seat during the event.
Sharma’s comment, “Save your energy, otherwise your plot will be occupied”, was seen as a reference to Rai due to an earlier dispute between the two leaders over a land-related issue.
Rai later alleged that he was invited to the event only to be “insulted” and called the incident undemocratic. PTI KIS VN VN
