New Delhi, July 1(PTI) On National Doctors’ Day on Tuesday, the campuses of AIIMS, Delhi and PGIMER, Chandigarh witnessed a peaceful and united protest by faculty members demanding the immediate implementation of Rotatory Headship — a long-standing call for “democratic, transparent, and inclusive leadership” in India’s top medical institutions.

Organised by the Faculty Association of AIIMS (FAIMS) and the Faculty Association of PGIMER (FA-PGIMER), the protest saw overwhelming participation from every department and discipline, a joint statement by these bodies said.

Faculty members donned black badges, wore protest T-shirts, and stood together during a relay hunger protest from 1 pm to 2 pm symbolising their shared commitment to fairness and academic integrity.

The powerful slogan of the day echoed across both campuses in one unified voice, “Ab ke baar, Rotatory paar!” — a clear message that this legitimate demand can no longer be ignored.

This symbolic protest is the culmination of two months of sustained faculty efforts, including submitting formal representations to institutional leadership and the Union Health Ministry.

Over 78 faculty supported this through internal polling and signature campaigns, awareness drives, and departmental resolutions were also made Despite these repeated efforts, the Rotatory Headship system — already adopted in many premier institutions across India — remains unimplemented at AIIMS New Delhi and PGIMER Chandigarh, the statement said.

This was not a strike, but a peaceful and dignified protest on a day that celebrates the medical profession, a moment to reflect on justice within our own academic institutions.

Rotatory Headship is a well-established model in top academic institutions across India. It prevents monopolization of power, ensures merit-based leadership and promotes departmental harmony, the statement said.

FAIMS and FA-PGIMER urged all concerned authorities to take immediate and concrete steps toward implementing Rotatory Headship. PTI PLB NB NB
