Madurai (Tamil Nadu), Sep 30 (PTI) Senior AIADMK leader R B Udhayakumar on Wednesday launched a scathing attack on Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay ahead of his campaign visit to Dharapuram for the upcoming Assembly by-election, accusing the ruling TVK of imposing an unnecessary election through “betrayal” and failing to deliver on governance.
In a video statement, Udhayakumar questioned the rationale behind fielding a candidate who had won the seat on AIADMK’s ‘Two Leaves’ symbol just four months ago, only to resign within 10 days and re-contest under the TVK banner.
“What is the underlying reason behind making someone who won on the Two Leaves symbol resign within 10 days and fielding them again on the TVK symbol in Dharapuram? Will the chief minister explain this to the people of the constituency,” Udhayakumar asked.
He labeled the move an act of political betrayal and a blatant breach of public trust that undermines democratic ethics.
Criticising the four-month TVK administration, the former minister alleged that public faith in Vijay had rapidly eroded since he took office.
He pointed out that despite grand arrangements made by TVK functionaries over the past week for the chief minister’s visit, Vijay has not announced any major welfare schemes or resolved critical local grievances, including acute drinking water shortages in Dharapuram.
“In these four months, the state has witnessed severe unannounced power cuts, deteriorating law and order, rising concerns over women’s safety, and widespread circulation of drugs,” Udhayakumar charged, adding that opposition parties are resolved to ensure the defeat of the TVK candidate in the bypoll.
The bypoll was necessitated due to the resignation of AIADMK MLA P Sathyabama (Dharapuram), who later joined the ruling TVK.
The bypoll will be held on October 6. PTI JR KH
