Mainpuri: A man allegedly hacked five people to death, including his newly-wed brother and his bride, and injured three others of his family before dying by suicide in Mainpuri district of Uttar Pradesh late Friday.
Local police are still trying to ascertain the motive behind Shiv Veer Yadav’s attack. A First Information Report was registered on Yadav’s father Subhash’s complaint.
Yadav ran a computer centre in Noida, and lived with his wife Dolly and two children. He was visiting home in Gokulpur village for his brother’s wedding, said the local police.
His 24-year-old brother Sonu married 20-year-old Soni in Etawah Thursday and the family returned Friday morning. Rituals were held throughout the day. Before everyone retired for the night, Yadav allegedly served them cold drinks laced with sedatives.
Anil Kumar Singh, inspector in-charge of Kishni Police Station in Mainpuri, told ThePrint that late at night, Yadav allegedly went to the first-floor bedroom and hacked Sonu and his wife to death with a long-handled axe.
Then, he allegedly attacked his youngest brother, 18-year-old Bhullan, his brother-in-law Saurabh, and friend Deepak, who were asleep on the ground floor, killing them right away.
Yadav allegedly went on to attack Dolly, 26-year-old sister Priyanka, and Subhash, injuring them. The victims, all sedated, could barely protect themselves from the assault but did cry out in pain. Hearing their cries, neighbours arrived at the site but Yadav allegedly fled and shot himself with a countrymade pistol before he could be caught. The pistol was found near Yadav’s body.
The injured were taken to the hospital where Dolly and Yadav’s father Subhash are said to be stable, while Priyanka is in a critical condition. The bodies have been sent for autopsy and the reports are expected late on Saturday.
Subhash has reportedly told the police that Yadav had been in financial trouble since demonetisation in 2016. He tried his hand at several businesses, including a printing press, but failed in all of them. This had frustrated him and he was upset.
So far, police have ruled out a property dispute but investigations are on.
