Patna, Apr 23 (PTI) BJP leader Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh on Thursday claimed that adulation of Mahatma Gandhi and Babasaheb Ambedkar has come at the expense of acknowledgement of the sacrifices made by the likes of Maharani Laxmi Bai, Birsa Munda, Tilka Majhi and Veer Kunwar Singh.

The former MP from Kaiserganj in Uttar Pradesh was addressing a function in Bhagalpur district of Bihar, which happens to be the birthplace of Majhi, on the occasion of the birth anniversary of Veer Kunwar Singh, one of the heroes of the Revolt of 1857.

Singh, who was in the news a couple of years ago when several women athletes accused him of sexual assault, while he headed the Wrestling Federation of India, also asserted that the Rajput community, to which Veer Kunwar Singh and he belong, “shall always maintain its dominance”.

“When our country got independence, due credit was not given to Rani Laxmibai, Veer Kunwar Singh, Bhagat Singh, Tilka Majhi and Birsa Munda, among others,” he said.

Singh mentioned a poem which was written hailing the contributions of Mahatma Gandhi, he said.

The BJP leader was referring to the Hindi song “Sabarmati ke sant tune kar diya kamaal” (O saint of Sabarmati, you have done wonders), written by Kavi Pradeep and sung by Asha Bhosle.

“This history put before us is not complete, yet we remain silent, and those who are silent are equally complicit in the distortion of history,” Singh said.

He claimed that the revolutionaries of the country who sacrificed their lives for India’s independence remain unsung. PTI SUK NN
