Chandigarh, Oct 18 (PTI) Actress Neeru Bajwa on Sunday said she has decided to put her latest Punjabi movie ‘Thaapi’ on hold amid an outrage over the murder of anti-drug activist Parvinder Singh Jhota in Mansa.

The movie, which is a sports drama, was released in theatres on October 16.

In a social media post on her Facebook page, Bajwa said that she and her team have decided to put the movie on hold “given the current situation”.

She wrote, “Whatever we are today, it is because of Punjab and Punjabiyat. The purpose of making the ‘Thaapi’ film is also the same, to bring life back to the fields of Punjab. Cinema is for the people. It can never be greater than the people.”

The actress further said that from tomorrow, the film will no longer be shown in any cinemas until the situation in Punjab improves.

“We stand with Punjab in every way, we stood with Punjab and we will continue to stand with Punjab,” she said.

Known for raising his voice against the illegal sale of addictive substances at chemist shops, Jhota was shot in broad daylight inside a medical store at a busy marketplace in Mansa on October 13.

Ashwani Kumar, the store owner who opened fire on Jhota after he questioned him for selling addictive drugs to an elderly man, was taken into custody from Rajasthan’s Salasar.

The incident, which took place while Jhota was hosting a Facebook Live, triggered a political slugfest in Punjab, which goes to polls early next year. PTI CHS SHS

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
