New Delhi, Sep 29 (PTI) A delegation of the ABVP-led Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) on Tuesday submitted a memorandum to Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, demanding urgent action on hostel construction, mandatory safety audits of PGs and buildings, stronger women’s safety measures, and compensation for families affected by the Satya Niketan building collapse.
The delegation, comprising DUSU President Yash Dabas, Secretary Riya Chhawri, Joint Secretary Lakshya Raj Singh and ABVP Delhi State Secretary Sarthak Sharma, met the chief minister and handed over the memorandum outlining concrete, time-bound steps to address student safety and accommodation concerns.
The memorandum calls for the construction of new student hostels across Delhi University colleges to address the acute shortage of institutional accommodation, and compulsory safety audits of paying guest (PG) accommodations, hostels and other buildings in student-dense areas in line with prescribed structural and fire-safety standards, the students said.
It also seeks robust women’s safety measures, including adequate lighting at identified “dark spots”, installation and upkeep of “Pink Booths”, and regular patrolling within and around the university campus, along with appropriate compensation for the families of those killed and injured in the September 6 Satya Niketan incident.
“It is essential to provide adequate and safe hostel facilities for students at Delhi University. Along with the construction of new hostels, regular safety audits of PGs and other buildings must be ensured in compliance with prescribed safety standards,” Dabas said.
He said coordinated action between the university administration and the government is critical to prevent a recurrence of incidents like Satya Niketan, where a five-storey building used as a PG collapsed, killing at least seven people.
Chhawri emphasised women’s safety, calling for strengthened lighting, functional Pink Booths and an effective patrolling system.
“Any negligence regarding women’s safety is unacceptable. It is essential to strengthen lighting arrangements, ‘Pink Booths,’ and patrolling systems at ‘dark spots’ within and around the university campus,” she said.
ABVP Delhi State Secretary Sarthak Sharma said raising safety issues only after tragedies is insufficient and demanded continuous accountability.
“Following the Satya Niketan incident, safety audits of hostels, PGs, and other buildings in accordance with prescribed standards must be conducted, effective women’s safety measures implemented, and appropriate compensation ensured for the affected families,” Sharma said.
