New Delhi: Kabir, the six-year-old son of Colonel Manpreet Singh, who was gunned down by terrorists in Kashmir Wednesday, paid his last respects to his father amid tearful scenes at their home in Haryana’s Panchkula.

His young sister stood next to him, also trying to salute, as friends and family held them up over Colonel Singh’s coffin.

Colonel Singh was laid to rest in Mohali’s Mullanpur on Friday evening.

Colonel Singh was commanding a unit that was trying to flush out terrorists from the forested area of Anantnag’s Kokernag Wednesday when he came under heavy fire.

Another Army major Ashish Dhonchak and Jammu and Kashmir police officer Humayung Bhat died along with him.

Dhonak was cremated in his native Binjhol village in Panipat on Friday with full military honours.

Jammu and Kashmir deputy superintendent of police (DySP) Humayun Bhat was also laid to rest in his Budgam village on Thursday, as hundreds paid respect. The young officer’s father Ghulam Hasan Bhat, a retired inspector general of police, laid a wreath on his son’s remains. Among the mourners, stood Humayun’s wife with their two-month-old daughter in her lap.

A joint team of the Army and the state police launched the operation Tuesday evening to bust the hideout of two LeT terrorists in Kokernag’s forested area.

But the terrorists spotted the force and opened fire from assault rifles as they neared. Colonel Singh, who was in the front, was hit by bullets along with the Major and the DySP.

The operation continued on the third straight day Friday as security men used drones and quadcopters to locate and neutralise the gunmen.
