80,000 Yaba tablets worth Rs 8 cr seized in Assam’s Karimganj district, 2 arrested

Karimganj (Assam): Assam Police have seized 80,000 Yaba tablets worth Rs 8 crore in the Karimganj district of the state.

A senior police official of Karimganj district said that, based on credible intelligence, a vehicle was intercepted at Churaibari checkpoint in the district along the Assam-Tripura border on October 8 evening.

“On thorough search, the police team recovered 8 packets of Yaba tablets (total: 80,000 tablets) from the hood of the vehicle. The police team apprehended two persons,” the official said.

The apprehended persons were identified as Tinku Malakar and Sujit Deb from Tripura.
The police officer further said that the market value of the seized drugs is estimated at around Rs 8 crore.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma wrote on X: “Based on credible intelligence, @karimganjpolice successfully executed an anti-narcotics operation, intercepting a truck and seizing 80,000 YABA tablets. Two individuals have also been apprehended in connection with this case. Good job by @assampolice.”

Further investigation is underway, said the police.

On Monday, Assam Rifles, in a joint operation with the police, apprehended one person and seized 10,000 Yaba tablets worth Rs 1 crore in Karimganj district.

Karimganj ASP Pratap Das said that the seizure was carried out in the Badarpur police station area upon information about the transportation of narcotics.

“We had source information about the transportation of narcotics. Accordingly, we launched an operation in the Badarpur police station area and apprehended one person, Dilwar Hussain Choudhary (23 years old) from the Katigorah area. The market value of the seized drugs is estimated at around Rs 1 crore,” ASP Pratap Das said.

Earlier on October 6, police seized 1.5 kg of illegal drugs valued at Rs 3 crore in Karbi Anglong district in the state and apprehended two persons.
