Kolkata, Sep 30 (PTI) The police in West Bengal’s Alipurduar district seized 50 buffaloes from a container truck and arrested two persons in this connection, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari said on Wednesday.
The vehicle was intercepted near Raidhak Bridge during a naka checking following specific information, Adhikari said in a Facebook post.
The driver allegedly failed to produce valid permits or documents for transporting the animals, following which he and his helper were arrested, he said.
The chief minister added that the state government had adopted a zero-tolerance policy towards cattle smuggling.
The arrested persons were identified as 32-year-old Sagir Ahmed, the driver, and Abdul Kadir, 19, the helper.
“A significant breakthrough against illegal cattle trafficking. Barobisha Outpost under Kumargram Police Station, Alipurduar, intercepted an illegal consignment today,” the chief minister said.
He said a case was being initiated against the two accused under relevant legal provisions.
“I appreciate the Alipurduar Police District for their relentless vigilance, swift response and exceptional efforts in thwarting such illegal operation,” Adhikari said.
“Illegal trafficking and smuggling of cattle or any bovine animals in West Bengal will simply not be permitted. There is an absolute Zero-Tolerance policy against cattle smuggling across the State,” Adhikari said. PTI SCH NN
