Sonbhadra (UP), Jul 1 (PTI) Four people have been arrested for allegedly duping four Uttar Pradesh Police personnel of more than Rs 25 lakh by luring them to invest in fake online trading platforms by promising high returns, officials said on Wednesday.
Sonbhadra Superintendent of Police (SP) Abhishek Verma said the accused allegedly induced investors to put money into online trading platforms named “Botbro”, “Crossmarket” and “MineCrypto” by promising returns of 8-10 per cent.
The money was then transferred to multiple bank accounts and siphoned off, the officer said.
“The investigation initially began on a complaint filed by Constable Deepak Kumar Verma, currently posted in Sonbhadra, who alleged that he was cheated of about Rs 10.70 lakh through the fake investment scheme,” Verma, flanked by Additional SP Rishabh Runwal, told reporters at a press conference.
He said a technical analysis and scrutiny of banking transactions revealed that the same gang had similarly defrauded four police personnel posted in Sonbhadra of a total of Rs 25.03 lakh.
“Based on technical and banking evidence, four accused — Sufiyan, Mohammad Danish, Arshad Siddiqui and Tufail Khan, all residents of Lucknow — were identified and arrested during a raid conducted in the state capital on June 30,” Verma said.
Five mobile phones, a laptop and a four-wheeler allegedly used in the crime were recovered from the accused, he said.
During interrogation, the accused confessed to luring people across online trading platforms with promises of unusually high returns and later distributed the money received among themselves after routing it through multiple bank accounts, the SP said.
Verma said efforts were underway to identify and arrest other members of the network and recover the remaining proceeds of the fraud. PTI KIS DIV DIV
