Uttarkashi, Oct 10 (PTI) A 4.2 magnitude earthquake struck Uttarakhand’s Uttarkashi district on Saturday night, sending strong tremors across the Uttarkashi town and the Yamunotri valley.

According to the National Centre for Seismology, the earthquake, measuring 4.2 on the Richter scale, struck at 8.07 pm, with its epicentre located 2 km northwest of Uttarkashi at a depth of 11 km.

Purushottam Uniyal, a priest from Kharsali village, the winter seat of Yamunotri, said the tremors were strong enough to cause televisions inside homes to shake.

The sudden and intense tremors triggered panic, prompting people to rush outdoors, he said.

Saturday’s earthquake was the second tremor measuring above 4.0 on the Richter scale to hit Uttarakhand in four days. A 4.9-magnitude earthquake had struck Chamoli district on October 6.

Officials of the Uttarakhand State Disaster Management Authority (USDMA) said no damage had been reported so far. PTI COR DPT NB

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
