Thane, Jul 3 (PTI) Police have seized a stock of food grains, meant for the underprivileged people under the Public Distribution System (PDS), while being illegally transported for sale in Maharashtra’s Thane district, an official said on Thursday.

A case has been registered against three persons in this connection, he said.

A vehicle carrying the food grains, including rice, wheat and pulses valued at Rs 1.49 lakh, was intercepted at Rajnoli Naka in Bhiwandi area on June 30 afternoon.

The stock was being transported without any valid permit and was meant for sale in the open market to retail and wholesale customers, Bhiwandi crime unit-II API Dhanraj Kedar said.

A case has been registered against two fair price shop owners and the vehicle’s driver under sections 318(4) (cheating) and 3(5)(common intention) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and provisions of the Essential Commodities Act, the official said. PTI COR GK

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
