EC begins preparations for vice presidential election

Two days after Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned as the vice president of India, the Election Commission Wednesday said it has started preparation to elect his successor. Dhankhar announced his sudden resignation Monday evening, citing health reasons. The commission said the schedule for the poll would be announced soon.

Pakistan serial borrower steeped in fanaticism—India at UN

India has told a United Nations Security Council meeting presided over by Pakistan that there should be a “serious cost” to nations who foment crossborder terrorism, as it described the neighbouring country as a “serial borrower” steeped in “fanaticism”.

Parvathaneni Harish, the Permanent Representative of India to the UN, delivered the statement during the high-level open debate on ‘Promoting International Peace and Security through Multilateralism and Peaceful Settlement of Disputes’.

LS adjourned till 11 am tomorrow amid opposition protests 

The Lok Sabha witnessed noisy scenes and disruptions for the third consecutive day of the Monsoon session Wednesday as opposition members continued protesting against the revision of electoral rolls in Bihar. Waving placards and raising slogans, opposition members stormed into the Well of the House during Question Hour, leading to the adjournment of the proceedings till 11am 24 July.

CJI Gavai recuses from hearing Justice Varma’s plea 

Chief Justice of India (CJI) B.R. Gavai Wednesday recused from hearing a plea filed by Allahabad High Court judge Justice Yashwant Varma against an in-house inquiry report over the discovery of a huge amount of unexplained cash at his house. The matter was mentioned before CJI by Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal for urgent listing.

“It will not be possible for me to take up this matter because I was also part of the committee. We will list it,” the CJI said.

Indian UPI on foreign land 

Indian users will now be able to use the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) to make payments internationally through PayPal. The global payments company announced the launch of PayPal World, a new platform that aims to connect the world’s largest payment systems and digital wallets. The platform will start by offering interoperability between PayPal and Venmo, and include UPI as part of its initial launch. This means Indian consumers can now shop from international merchants and pay using the UPI option they are already familiar with.

Maharashtra govt’s new housing policy 

The Maharashtra government has launched a new housing policy, aiming to provide affordable and sustainable housing for all, including vulnerable sections of society. The policy targets building 3.5 million affordable homes by 2030, with a focus on inclusivity and environmental sustainability. The key aspect is the emphasis on Housing for All and a Slum-Free Maharashtra.

ED files case against Myntra 

The Enforcement Directorate Wednesday said it has registered a case against the Flipkart-backed e-commerce platform Myntra, its directors and companies linked to it for alleged violations of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) guidelines. The case has been registered under Section 16(3) of the Foreign Exchange Management Act.

‘Chinnaswamy unsuitable for mass gatherings’

The Chinnaswamy stadium’s “design and structure” are “unsuitable and unsafe” for mass gatherings, the Justice John Michael Cunha Commission, which was constituted to investigate the 4 June stampede outside the stadium, has concluded. The stampede during the celebrations of RCB’s maiden IPL trophy victory left 11 people dead.

Illegal mine collapses in Dhanbad, 9 feared trapped

An illegal mine near the Jamunia River in Dhanbad collapsed, with nine people feared trapped. According to local residents, 15 workers were present in the mine when carbonaceous rock gave way. The collapse is believed to have been caused due to weakly supported pillars within the illegal excavation site.

Doha-bound AI Express flight develops snag, returns to Calicut

More than two hours after taking off, a Doha-bound Air India Express flight returned to the Calicut International Airport due to a technical snag. An airport official told PTI that flight IX 375 had 188 people onboard including passengers, pilots and crew. It took off from Calicut at 9.07 am and returned to the same airport at 11.12 am. “There was some technical issue in the aircraft’s cabin AC. It was not an emergency landing,” the official said.
