New Delhi, Jul 11 (PTI) A 17-year-old boy drowned while swimming in a pond at Ashoka Park in southeast Delhi’s New Friends Colony area, police said on Friday.
The incident took place on Wednesday afternoon when the teenager, identified as Salman, a resident of Kastbadda village in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, went to the park with some acquaintances.
“A PCR call was received regarding the drowning incident, following which a police team rushed to the spot,” an officer said.
Police said the boy had recently arrived in Delhi to meet his father, who works as a labourer and stays in a rented accommodation in Khijrabad.
Preliminary enquiry revealed that Salman had entered the water fountain pond at Ashoka Park for a swim. He, however, drowned soon after.
“Divers were called in and they managed to pull the boy out of the water. He was rushed to a hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead,” the officer added.
The pond is surrounded by an iron railing.
Legal proceedings under Section 194 (suicide or suspicious deaths) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) have been initiated.
The body was later shifted to the AIIMS mortuary, where a post-mortem examination was conducted.
Further investigation is underway. PTI BM HIG
