CJI says he ‘will look into it’ as plea on stray dogs mentioned in SC

Chief Justice of India B R Gavai assured on Wednesday that he “will look into it,” when a plea relating to stray dogs was mentioned for urgent hearing in the Supreme Court. The plea by the Conference for Human Rights (India) was mentioned before a bench of the Chief Justice and Justice K Vinod Chandran by a lawyer. Another bench has already passed an order in relation to stray dogs, the CJI also pointed. The Bench comprising Justice J B Pardiwala and Justice R Mahadevan mandated relocating strays to shelters and prohibiting their release back into public spaces on Monday.

SC cancels bail to wrestler Sushil Kumar in murder case, orders surrender in a week

The Supreme Court cancelled bail to Olympic medalist Sushil Kumar in a murder case of former junior national wrestling champion Sagar Dhankar at the Chhatrasal Stadium in Delhi. A dual bench of justices Sanjay Karol and Prashant Kumar Mishra set aside Delhi High Court order that was passed on 4 March. Sushil Kumar has been asked to surrender within a week.

11 killed, including 7 children, as pickup van rams into truck in Rajasthan’s Dausa

A pickup van crashed into a parked truck in Rajasthan’s Dausa district in the early hours of Wednesday. 11 people, including seven children, were reported dead by the police while eight others injured. The accident occurred on Manoharpur highway around 4-5 am when the passengers were returning to their village in Uttar Pradesh’s Etah after visiting Khatu Shyam and Salasar Balaji temples, Dausa Superintendent of Police Sagar told PTI. Those killed include seven children and four women, he added.

Marathi outfit activists detained as they gather at kabutarkhana in Mumbai 

Mumbai Police detained several members of the Marathi Ekikaran Samiti, including its president Govardhan Deshmukh, as they gathered at a kabutarkhana in Mumbai’s Dadar area to support the ban on pigeon feeding. The activists gathered around 11am at the kaburtarkhana and heavy security was deployed to avoid any untoward incident.

Hunt for terrorists in Kulgam in final stages, says Kashmir IGP

The hunt for terrorists hiding in the forest area of Kulgam district of Jammu and Kashmir has entered its final stages, on the 13th day of the operation, a top police officer told PTI. Two Army soldiers have been killed and nine injured in the Akhal forest area since the operation began on 1 August while two ‘terrorists’ have also been killed in the encounter. The identities and affiliation of the dead ‘terrorists’ have not been revealed yet.

5 held as narcotics-arms smuggling network busted in Jalandhar, Punjab

Five people were arrested for allegedly running a narcotics and arms smuggling network in Punjab’s Jalandhar. Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav said seven weapons and 1.50 kg heroin have been recovered from their possession.

DGP Yadav took to social media platform X and said, “In a major breakthrough in the fight against drug trafficking and illegal arms, Jalandhar Commissionerate police busts a multi-layered narcotic and arms smuggling network.”

Mentally-challenged mute woman gang-raped in UP, chased by men 

A mentally challenged, deaf-mute woman was allegedly gang-raped in Uttar Pradesh’s Balrampur district after being chased by men on bikes on a deserted road. The incident was captured on a CCTV footage where the woman, seemingly barefoot, was seen running on a dimly lit deserted road and men chasing her on motorcycles, which helped in the identification of two suspects, police said. Ankur Verma and Harshit Pandey are the two accused who were arrested following a police encounter and have confessed to the crime during preliminary interrogation, said Superintendent of Police Vikash Kumar.

PM Modi likely to visit New York for UNGA session next month

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to address the annual session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in September, according to a provisional list of speakers issued by the UN. The 80th session of the UNGA will begin on 9 September and the General Debate will run from 23-29 September, with Brazil as the traditional first speaker of the session, followed by the United States.
