Nanded, Apr 30 (PTI) The Women and Child Development department has successfully prevented 11 child marriages across Nanded district since Akshaya Tritiya on April 19, an official said on Thursday.

The 11 cases comprise three each in Nanded and Loha, two in Naigaon, one each in Degloor, Bhokar and Mukhed, he added.

The action was carried out by WCD department, District Child Protection Unit, police and local administration following complaints received on Childline 1098, a 24-hour national emergency helpline for child protection, the official said.

District Collector Rahul Kardile urged citizens to report any instances of child marriage immediately by calling the toll-free number 1098.

Under the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, the legal age for marriage is 21 years for males and 18 years for females. PTI COR BNM
