New Delhi, Oct 17 (PTI) A 40-year-old man was killed and four people were injured after a Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) bus allegedly driven recklessly by a woman driver rammed into multiple vehicles in central Delhi’s Anand Parbat area on Saturday, police said.

The accident took place around 10:15 am at the T-point of DBG Road near the Anand Parbat bus stand, involving a bus plying on route number 212, two scooters, a motorcycle, an e-rickshaw and a cycle rickshaw, according to police.

The deceased was identified as Atul Bharadwaj (40), a resident of Ranikheda in Delhi. He was riding a scooter when the bus hit the vehicle, killing him on the spot. His pillion rider, Bhushan Kumar (38), a resident of Prem Nagar, sustained injuries, police said.

The rider of the other scooter, Rakesh (48), a resident of Bapa Nagar, also suffered injuries. Dhruv Kumar Mishra (56), a resident of Bihar’s Bhagalpur who was driving a rickshaw, was injured, while Deepak (34), a resident of Shakurpur, who was riding a motorcycle, sustained minor injuries.

The deceased was taken to the Lady Hardinge Medical College (LHMC) Hospital by Police Control Room (PCR) staff. The injured were taken to the LHMC Hospital and the Jeevan Mala Hospital by locals, police said.

“A PCR call regarding the accident was received at the DBG Road police station, following which a team reached the spot. An FIR has been registered under appropriate sections of law and the woman driver, identified as Renu Bala (26), a resident of Fatehabad in Haryana, has been apprehended,” a senior police officer said.

Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos following the collision, claiming that people gathered in large numbers and tried to pull out those trapped beneath the bus.

Rahul, an eyewitness, said he heard a loud noise and saw two people beneath the wheels of the bus.

“People gathered in large numbers. In the commotion, the woman driver fled the spot. Some people tried to tilt the bus and pull out those trapped beneath its wheels,” he said.

Rahul also claimed that traffic police personnel were not present at the spot when the accident occurred. He demanded the installation of traffic lights at the intersection, saying the stretch is heavily congested because traffic from three different routes merge there.

Another eyewitness, who said he was standing outside his house at the time of the incident, alleged that the bus was being driven recklessly.

“It was a very tragic incident. The public pulled out those trapped beneath the bus,” he said, adding that both the driver and the conductor fled the spot soon after the incident.

The eyewitness further alleged that police did not reach the spot promptly and said some angry people attempted to damage the bus. Those present intervened and asked them not to do so, he added.

Police are investigating the circumstances leading to the collision.

“The DTC has initiated a probe into the incident. Full details are being collected,” a senior transport department official said. PTI BM SSM RC

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
