Thiruvananthapuram, Sep 10 (PTI) A one-and-a-half-year-old girl died, and her mother was taken into custody in connection with a suspected murder at Vilavoorkal on Thursday, police said.
The deceased was Ivana, also known as Anna, daughter of Abhijith and Christy.
According to police, the incident occurred in the evening when a neighbour heard cries coming from the family’s house.
Neighbours rushed to the house and found the child with a severe injury to her neck. They initially took her to a nearby primary health centre, from where she was shifted to SAT Hospital in Thiruvananthapuram. However, she succumbed to her injuries at the hospital, police said.
Following the information, officials from the Malayinkeezhu police station reached the house and took Christy into custody.
Police said the woman claimed to have killed her daughter, but the reason for the alleged act could not be ascertained. Officials said Abhijith and Christy had been married for four years, and Anna was their only child.
The child’s grandmother lived with the family as well.
Preliminary information gathered from neighbours suggested that Abhijith was not present at the time of the incident, police said.
Police were questioning Christy to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the child’s death and the reason for the alleged act. A case would be registered after the interrogation, officials added. PTI TBA SSK
