New Delhi: A video has gone viral on social media, falsely claiming that a Hindu girl has been saved by a Hindu mob from being killed by a ‘Muslim’ man.
A user named ‘Saffron Lion’ shared the video on Twitter Thursday, claiming that a Hindu girl was rescued by “Hindu brothers” in Patratu Valley in Ramgarh district of Jharkhand. The user further wrote that a ‘shantidoot’ (messenger of peace) had brought the girl to Patratu with the motive to kill her. The word ‘shantidoot’ is often used on social media as a euphemism to describe Muslims.

The video shows a girl, whose face and neck have deep cut marks, telling the mob that she has been hurt. At the end of the video, the mob is seen beating up a youth.
The video had over 1,500 retweets, more than 2,000 likes and 16.3K views at the time of publishing this report.
It has also been shared widely on Facebook with the same false claims. A Facebook user, Ratan Modi, shared the video Thursday, and it now has over 60,000 views and more than 1,000 shares.
Fact check
The video relates to an incident that took place in Ramgarh district on 15 September. The girl, who appears in the video, was indeed injured, not by a Muslim youth, but allegedly by her own Hindu boyfriend, identified as Arvind Kumar.
Kumar, who hails from Chandwa in Latehar district of Jharkhand, allegedly tried to slit the girl’s throat after she refused to marry him. Hearing the girl’s screams, a mob gathered and caught hold of Kumar, who was thrashed and then handed over to the police.
