New Delhi: A video circulating on social media shows school children scanning their identity cards at a machine to record attendance. Many users who shared the clip claimed it was shot at a school in New Delhi.

However, it has now emerged that the video was shot at a school in Pakistan. It was first uploaded on 31 July 2019 by a YouTube channel called 96NewsPakistan. While the school’s name and its exact location are not clear, the video has since been shared by numerous Facebook and YouTube handles from Pakistan.

It was on 11 August that a Facebook user claimed it was shot at a school in Delhi. The caption, written in Hindi, translated to: “Look how Kejriwal (Arvind Kejriwal) has transformed Delhi schools, the whole world is coming to witness. As soon as the kid marks the attendance, a message reaches to the parents.” His post was shared 68,000 times.

The same video and caption were shared on Facebook again on 13 November, and the post shared by 4,000 people.

Arvind Kejriwal’s promise

The circulation of the fake video comes in the backdrop of Kejriwal’s decision to install CCTV cameras in government schools across the capital. The Delhi CM had launched the project on 6 July.

Kejriwal had then claimed that around 1,000 schools would have security cameras by November. Private schools were also asked to implement the order, and the idea was to allow parents to keep track of children.

“There will be no privacy breach, children go to school for education, to learn discipline and become good citizens of the country, they do not go there for anything private,” he had said. The CM had also emphasised that CCTVs would improve security of students.
