Viral image of fighter jets at Purvanchal Expressway inauguration is from Hungary airshow

The photograph shared by Twitter users was that of a 2008 airshow in Kecskemet, Hungary, featuring an Italian aerobatics team.

New Delhi: In the wake of the inauguration of the Purvanchal Expressway by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Uttar Pradesh Wednesday, several Twitter users, including Bharatiya Janata Party National Secretary Y. Satya Kumar, shared an image featuring PM Modi and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath standing in front of several fighter jets purportedly leaving a ‘contrail’ or smoke of saffron, white and green hues of the Indian flag.

Satya Kumar Tuesday shared the image with caption: “उत्तर प्रदेश – #एक्सप्रेस_प्रदेश”.

 

Yogi Devnath, Mahant of Ekaldham Ashram, who has 1.3 million followers on Twitter, wrote, “THANK YOU MODI JI AND YOGI JI #एक्सप्रेस_प्रदेश”. 

Sunanda Vashisht, who, according to her bio is a political commentator and columnist, shared the image and wrote, “A picture is worth thousand words. There are a thousand things you can infer from this picture. If you follow India’s politics regularly, this will give you a good sense of where India is headed”. It has been liked by over 2,300 people and was retweeted by 270 users.  

Fact check

The photo of the fighter jets is actually from the Kecskemet Airshow, an event that took place in Hungary in August 2008. The show was performed by the renowned aerobatics demonstration team of the Italian air force, Frecce Tricolori, in Kecskemet, Hungary. The image is taken from the Shutterstock website.
