New Delhi: Trinamool Congress Rajya Sabha MP Jawhar Sircar Wednesday shared a purportedly edited video with the claim that Prime Minister Narendra Modi faced protests during his trip to Varanasi this month but the media didn’t cover the incident.

“Wow! Protests during Modi’s midnight Kashi Parikrama. Some guts. The Godi Media will not show this,” Sircar said. The video gave the impression that people were chanting “Modi haye haye” and “Modi chor hai”.

His tweet received over 200 retweets and nearly 600 likes.

However, many users expressed their doubts about the authenticity of the video. Their suspicions were bolstered when Twitter marked Sircar’s tweet as “manipulated media”.

Where the footage is from

A closer look revealed that the audio of the clip had been edited. The original footage of the crowd dates from 14 December, during PM Modi and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s midnight inspection of development projects in Varanasi.

The video was uploaded by the Times of India on its website with the crowd clearly showing support for PM Modi and chanting ‘Jai Shri Ram’.

At the time of publishing this report, Sircar was yet to delete his tweet or issue a response to Twitter’s ‘manipulated media’ tag.
