New Delhi: Over the last three days, a video has gone viral on Twitter with many social media users claiming that it shows a BJP leader being gunned down on the streets.
The video contains disturbing images of a person being shot multiple times while he is lying in a pool of blood.
It was uploaded on Twitter on 24 October by a user who calls himself “Pankaj Kumar Savarkar” and claims to belong to Rewari district in Haryana. He also describes himself as a staunch Hindu, or “Kattar Hindu”, in his Twitter bio.
The video has been captioned as: “A murder in Sardar city, BJP leader Bhim Saharan shot dead.” The Twitter handles of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh have also been tagged in the caption by the user.
The video has raked in more than 3,600 views so far and has been retweeted 400 times.
Old video from Brazil
The video, however, is an old one.
A version of the video shows that it was uploaded on YouTube on 15 December 2015. However, according to French media organisation ‘France 24‘, the video was published in November 2015 on YouTube but was taken down later.
The French media outlet claims that some Portuguese words can be heard in the video. It also claims that the video was shared by several user accounts based in Brazil, suggesting that the incident was possibly an attempt to settle personal scores. According to France 24, the video had garnered 1,25,000 views and was shared more than 750 times.
