India’s active cases rise to 1,39,637, over 24,000 people vaccinated with second dose

New Delhi: For the last three days, active cases in India have been steadily increasing. The surge in cases could be due to the rise in new cases in Maharashtra.

Meanwhile, healthcare workers who were inoculated with the first dose of the Covid-19 vaccine 28 days ago have started receiving the second dose of the vaccine. Over 24,000 people have received the second dose so far.

In the last 24 hours, India recorded 11,649 new cases of Covid-19. Both Kerala and Maharashtra reported more than 4,000 new cases in a single day.

After increasing for three consecutive days, India’s active case count stands at 1,39,637.

In the last 24 hours, 90 deaths were reported from across the country, bringing the Covid-19 death toll to 1,55,732. Maharashtra and Kerala reported the highest number of daily deaths.

Punjab’s case fatality rate remains the highest in the country at 3.23. Meanwhile, Maharashtra’s CFR is the second-highest at 2.49 and Sikkim has a fatality rate of 2.20, which is the the third-highest in the country. The overall fatality rate for India has reduced to 1.43.

In the last 24 hours, 4,86,122 Covid-19 tests were carried out across 1,218 government laboratories and 1,161 private laboratories in the country. Over 20.6 crore tests have been carried out in the country since the beginning of the pandemic.

Positivity rate

In the last 24 hours, India’s daily positivity rate increased to 2.3 per cent. This is a 37 per cent increase over what was recorded yesterday. The overall positivity rate, calculated since the beginning of the pandemic, has further decreased to 5.2 per cent.

In the last 24 hours, 9,489 Covid-19 patients were discharged from across India, bringing the total number of recoveries since the beginning of the pandemic to 1,06,21,220.

A total of 82,85,295 healthcare and frontline workers have been vaccinated so far.

The government started administering the second dose of the vaccine to those who were vaccinated with the first dose about 28 days ago on 13 February. As many as 24,561 healthcare workers have received the second dose so far.

A total of 1,09,16,589 people in India have been infected with Covid-19 since the beginning of the pandemic. The highest number of cases were reported from Maharashtra, followed by Kerala and Karnataka.

States with highest active cases

Active cases in Kerala have reduced to 63,752, with 4,612 new Covid-19 cases reported in the last 24 hours. This brings the total number of Covid-19 cases in the state to 10,04,135.

With 15 deaths reported in the last 24 hours, the death toll for Kerala now stands at 3,985.

In Maharashtra, the number of active cases increased significantly to 37,146. In the last 24 hours, the state reported 4,092 new cases of Covid, bringing the total number of cases detected from the state to 20,64,278.

A total of 51,529 people have died of Covid in Maharashtra, with 40 deaths reported in the last 24 hours.

Karnataka reported 414 new Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours. This has brought the total infections detected in the state to 9,45,270.

Active Covid-19 cases in the state now stand at 5,855. With four deaths reported in the last 24 hours, the state’s death toll rose to 12,265.

Tamil Nadu’s active cases have declined to 4,260. In the last 24 hours, 470 new cases of Covid-19 were detected in the state. A total of 8,45,120 people in the state have so far been infected with Covid-19.

With six deaths reported in the last 24 hours, the state’s Covid-19 death toll rose to 12,419.

West Bengal reported 190 new cases of Covid-19 in the last 24 hours, which has brought the total number of cases detected from the state so far to 5,72,595.

Of these, 4,086 cases are active, while 10,232 people have succumbed to the Covid-19 infection. Two deaths were reported from the state in the last 24 hours.
