India records less than 10,000 new Covid cases second time this week, over 74 lakh vaccinated

New Delhi: India reported less than 10,000 new Covid-19 cases in a single day for the second time this week.

India’s R value, an indicator of how fast the infection is spreading, has also remained constant at 0.92 since last week.

Meanwhile, over 74 lakh healthcare workers have now been vaccinated against Covid-19 across the country.

India’s effective reproduction number (R) remained constant at 0.92. R value, an indicator of how fast the infection is spreading, needs to be sustained below 1 for the pandemic to come an end.

In the last 24 hours, India recorded 9,309 new cases of Covid-19. This is the second time this week that the number of new cases has remained below the 10,000-mark.

After an increase Thursday, active cases in India once again saw a decline to 1,35,926 Friday. Kerala and Maharashtra have the highest number of active cases.

India’s Covid-19 death toll now stands at 1,55,447, with 87 deaths reported in the last 24 hours. Maharashtra and Kerala reported the highest number of daily deaths among the states.

Punjab’s case fatality rate (CFR) remains the highest in the country at 3.23. Meanwhile, Maharashtra’s CFR is the second-highest at 2.50. Sikkim’s fatality rate is 2.20. The overall fatality rate for India has reduced to 1.43.

A total of 20,47,89,784 Covid-19 tests have been carried out in the country since the beginning of the pandemic. In the last 24 hours, 7,65,944 Covid-19 tests were carried out across 1,214 government laboratories and 1,159 private laboratories.

The daily test positivity rate for India for the last 24 hours dropped to 1.2 per cent. The overall positivity, calculated since the beginning of the pandemic, is 5.3 per cent.

In the last 24 hours, 15,858 Covid-19 patients were discharged from hospitals across India. This brings the total number of Covid-19 recoveries since the beginning of the pandemic to 1,05,89,230.

A total of 74,30,866 healthcare workers have been vaccinated in the country so far, with 4,13,752 people vaccinated in the last 24 hours.

A total of 1,08,80,603 people in India have been infected with Covid-19 since the beginning of the pandemic, with the largest number of cases so far reported from Maharashtra, followed by Karnataka and Kerala.

States with highest active cases

Active cases in Kerala reduced to 64,180 Friday. As many as 5,281 new Covid-19 cases have been reported from the state. This brings the total number of cases in the state to 9,88,655.

A total of 3,936 people have died due to Covid-19 since the beginning of the pandemic, with 16 deaths reported in the last 24 hours.

In Maharashtra, the number of active cases fell to 31,437. The state reported 652 new cases in the last 24 hours.

This brings the total number of cases detected from the state since the beginning of the pandemic to 20,52,905. A total of 51,415 people have died of Covid in Maharashtra, with 25 deaths reported in the last 24 hours.

Karnataka reported 430 new Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours, bringing the total infections detected in the state since the beginning of the pandemic to 9,44,057.

The total number of active cases in the state now stand at 5,977. As many as 12,251 people have died in the state, with seven deaths reported since Thursday.

West Bengal’s active case count fell to 4,313, as the state reported 217 new Covid-19 cases Thursday. The total number of infections detected from the state so is 5,72,032.

A total of 10,225 people in the state have lost their lives to Covid, with five deaths reported in the last 24 hours.

Tamil Nadu saw active cases drop to 4,294, with 481 new cases of Covid-19 detected since yesterday. A total of 8,43,690 people in the state have so far been infected with Covid-19.

Of this, 12,402 people have died, with six deaths reported in the last 24 hours.
