Daily deaths from Covid-19 fall below 500 first time in over 3 months, recovery rate crosses 90%

New Delhi: For the first time since 12 July, the number of Covid-19 deaths in 24 hours fell under 500. Monday reported a total of 480 deaths.

Meanwhile, the Covid-19 recovery rate has crossed 90 per cent in India, with the case fatality rate falling to 1.50.

Active cases

The number of active cases remains on a declining trend. India reported 6,53,717 active Covid-19 cases as of Monday.

This accounts for 8.26 per cent of the total Covid-19 cases detected in the country so far.

As many as 480 people died from Covid-19 in the last 24 hours, bringing the total Covid-19 death toll to 1,19,014.

Punjab’s case fatality rate (CFR) remains 3.14 — the highest in the country, while  Maharashtra and Gujarat are the second and third worst performing states in terms of CFRs.

Maharashtra’s CFR remained the same as last week — 2.63 — and Gujarat’s CFR has reduced to 2.21 Monday from about 2.24 Friday.

Kerala now has overtaken Karnataka to become the state with the second highest burden of active cases. Yet, it has a low CFR of 0.34. The overall CFR for India has further decreased to about 1.50.

A total of 9,39,309 Covid-19 tests were carried out in the last 24 hours across 1,126 government and 880 private laboratories in the country.

This is a significant reduction in the number of tests conducted. Last week, the number of tests went over 14 lakhs on three days.

A total of 10,34,62,778 tests have been conducted in the country since the beginning of the pandemic.

Positivity rate

The daily test positivity rate (TPR) increased to 4.8 per cent from 3.7 per cent last week. A spike in TPR on Mondays has been a usual trend, since the number of tests conducted over the weekend is usually lower.

Overall TPR, calculated since the beginning of the pandemic, fell to 7.6 per cent.

Recovered cases

As many as 71,37,228 people have recovered from Covid-19 over the course of the pandemic, with 59,105 patients discharged in the last 24 hours.

India’s recovery rate has now crossed the 90 per cent threshold, increasing to 90.23 per cent over the weekend.

Total cases

The total number of confirmed Covid-19 cases in India now stands at 79,09,959 — second only to the US.

This accounts for nearly 18 per cent of the total coronavirus cases recorded from across the world so far.

High-burden states

In Maharashtra, a total of 16,45,020 Covid-19 cases have been reported since the beginning of the pandemic. Of these, 1,41,001 cases are active.

In the last 24 hours, 211 deaths were reported from the state. This brings Maharashtra’s death toll to 43,264 — the highest in the country.

Over the last 24 hours, Karnataka reported 4,439 new Covid-19 cases and 32 deaths. This brings the total case count of the state to 8,02,817, of which 81,069 are active cases.

The state’s total death toll is now 10,905.

In Tamil Nadu, a total of 7,09,005 cases have been reported since the beginning of the pandemic.

In the last 24 hours, 2,869 fresh Covid-19 cases and 31 deaths were reported in the state. The state currently has 30,606 active cases, while 10,924 people have died of Covid-19 infection so far.

Andhra Pradesh has reported 2,997 Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours, bringing the state’s active cases to 30,860. As many as 21 people have died in the last 24 hours, bringing the state’s total death toll to 6,587.

A total of 8,07,023 cases have been reported from the state since the beginning of the pandemic.

Uttar Pradesh has reported 2,052 new covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of Covid-19 cases reported from the state to 4,70,270. As of Monday, the state has 27,317 active cases.

The Covid-19 death toll in Uttar Pradesh increased to 6,882, with 28 deaths reported in the last 24 hours.

Tests and positive cases

Over the last 24 hours, Maharashtra’s test positivity rate shot up to 17.9 per cent, after having fallen to just over 10 Friday. A TPR above 10 per cent indicates that the state is not conducting enough tests.

Uttar Pradesh continues to have the lowest TPR among high burden states — 1.7 per cent.
