25 cases of UK’s mutated virus found in India, overall Covid recovery rate crosses 96%

New Delhi: India’s total active cases fell below 2.6 lakh in the last 24 hours. However, the Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG) — a consortium of 10 government labs conducting genome sequencing — has found a total of 25 cases of the mutated virus, which originated in the UK, in India.

While 20 cases were reported Wednesday, four new cases were found by the National Institute Virology, Pune, and one new case was sequenced in the Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology, Delhi Thursday.

All 25 patients are in physical isolation in health facilities, according to the health ministry.

Meanwhile, India’s overall recovery rate crossed 96 per cent, which is one of the highest in the world.

India reported 21,822 new cases of Covid-19 in the last 24 hours. Nearly 60 per cent of these cases were reported in the top five states with the highest number of active cases.

The number of active Covid-19 cases declined to 2,57,656, as the number of recoveries continue to outnumber the new cases. This accounts for 2.51 per cent of the total number of cases reported in India so far.

As many as 299 patients died across the country in the last 24 hours. The total coronavirus death toll in India is now 1,48,738. The highest number of deaths were reported from Maharashtra.

Punjab’s case fatality remains at 3.20 — the highest in the country. Meanwhile, Maharashtra has the second highest CFR of 2.56.

Sikkim’s fatality rate is now 2.16. India’s overall case fatality rate is at 1.45.

In the last 24 hours, 11,27,244 Covid-19 tests were conducted across 1,200 government and 1,089 private laboratories.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, a total of 17,20,49,274 tests have been carried out in India.

Positivity rate

The test positivity rate increased slightly to 1.9 per cent in the last 24 hours. The overall test positivity rate, calculated since the beginning of the pandemic, is now 5.9 per cent.

As many as 26,139 Covid patients were discharged across the country. Since the beginning of the pandemic, 98,60,280 people have recovered from the infection. The recovery rate in India crossed 96 per cent, and is one of the highest in the world.

A total of 1,02,66,674 cases of Covid-19 have been reported in India since the beginning of the pandemic. The highest number of cases have been reported from Maharashtra, followed by Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.

States with highest active cases

Kerala’s active cases count increased to 65,572 — which is the highest in the country — in the last 24 hours.

As many as 6,268 people tested positive for the virus in the last 24 hours. In the last two days, new cases in the state have been increasing.

A total of 7,55,718 people from the state have tested positive for the disease in the state since the beginning of the pandemic. Of these, 3,042 people have died, with 28 deaths were reported in the last 24 hours.

Maharashtra’s active case count reduced to 54,206, with 3,537 new cases detected in the last 24 hours. The state has, so far, reported 19,28,603 Covid-19 cases, which is the highest in the country.

The state continues to report the highest number of deaths in the country every day. In the last 24 hours, 90 deaths were reported in the state. The death toll is now 49,463, which makes up one-third of the total Covid deaths in India so far.

Uttar Pradesh reported 1,025 new cases of Covid-19 in the last 24 hours, which has brought the total number of cases reported in the state to 5,84,966.

The state’s active case count fell to 14,155. As many as 12 deaths were reported from the state in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of Covid-19 deaths in the state to 8,352.

West Bengal reported 1,178 new cases in the last 24 hours. The number of active cases in the state dropped to 12,381.

This has brought the total number of cases detected from the state to 5,50,893. Of these, 9,683 people have died, with 28 deaths reported in the last 24 hours.

In Chhattisgarh, 1,069 new cases of Covid-19 were reported in the last 24 hours, which has brought the total number of cases to 2,78,540 in the state. Active cases in the state fell to 11,939. With 14 deaths reported in the last 24 hours, the state’s Covid-19 death toll rose to 3,350.
