IISc Bangalore has once again emerged as the topmost institution from India, show Times Higher Education rankings.
New Delhi: IIT Indore has managed to secure a place among the top 400 global universities, a first for the engineering institute, the latest Times Higher Education (THE) World Rankings show.
The nine-year-old institute, which applied for the first time this year, has earned this recognition because of its research volume and impact, scoring in the 351-400 category in the world rankings.
“Our efforts in making research the focus of the institute has now reflected in the form of citation and other impact metrics of research,” IIT Indore director Pradeep Mathur said in a statement.
IIT Indore has left behind IIT Bombay, which slipped from its earlier ranking of 351-400 to the 401-500 band.
Yet again, IISc Bangalore has emerged as the topmost institution from India this year, retaining its spot in the 251-300 band. Another surprise entry is Jagadguru Sri Shivarathreeswara University, Mysuru, which is among the top 5 Indian universities and top 500 global universities.

Globally, Oxford University has topped the list because of its research volume and reputation, followed by Cambridge University and Stanford. These three universities have managed to retain last year’s positions.
India increased its presence compared to last year and became the 5th best represented nation in the world. India claimed 49 places this year, up from 42 last year.
Among other Indian institutions, Amrita University saw an impressive rise in the latest ranking, going up from 801-1000 band to 601-800 this year.
The Modi government has been pushing institutions to get a place in the world rankings. The ‘Institute of Eminence’ tag, formulated by the HRD ministry, stems from this idea.
Six institutes, including IIT Delhi, IIT Bombay, IISc Bangalore, BITS Pilani, Manipal Institute and yet-to-be-established Jio Institute were recently declared as Institutes of Eminence by the government.
