New Delhi: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz’s recent song choice at her nephew’s wedding has not gone down well with Pakistanis.
In a viral video, Nawaz was seen singing the Bollywood song ‘Chura Liya Hai Tumne Jo Dil Ko’, and Pakistanis wasted no time in highlighting the similarities between her inadvertent song choices and her actions—her obsession with churana (stealing) soon became the talking point.
“Pora Pakistan chura liya is khandan ne (this family has looted the whole Pakistan),” Nisar Iftikhar wrote on Instagram.
Hate against Maryam Nawaz was visible in the social media posts. “Such a beautiful voice, what does she eat?” another user asked. Pat came the reply: “Pakistan”. More Pakistanis joined in roasting the politician, suggesting she “take this for career? And spare the poor country pls”.
Instagram user Saleeha had an important revelation to share: “Everything starts with ch, chor, chori, chura liya, churail (witch) epitome of her life, perfectly describes her.”

‘Most competent CM’
Apart from the Punjab CM’s singing talent, her sartorial choices too were actively being discussed.
Local reports indicated that Maryam Nawaz’s outfit—a purple trouser suit—was valued at approximately PKR 3,60,000. The Punjab CM had also chosen to wear Indian designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee for one of the events, which was said to be priced at INR 4,95,000.
Saad Kaiser, a PMLN supporter, shared a picture of Maryam Nawaz on X with the caption: “This is the cutest picture of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz. I think she’s the prettiest, yet most competent CM in the world!”
PTI supporters didn’t let the opportunity pass.
X user Shahaal Malik noted how PMLN supporters were celebrating Nawaz’s fashion choices, even though she wore an Indian designer’s dress. He argued that had Imran Khan done the same or asked for Indian donations for Shaukat Khanam hospital—the cancer hospital named after his mother—Pakistanis would criticise it for being funded by Indians.
“Maryam is wearing an Indian designer’s dress and its cost is 6 Lac Pkr.. Agar Shaukat Khanum ko kisi Pakistani ki Indian wife donation de tou Foreign funding aur agents k ilzaamat…Maryam Nawaz Indian designer ka dress pehny tou competent CM… (If Indians gave funding to Shaukat Khanam it would be labelled foreign funding by agents but now that Maryam Nawaz is wearing an Indian made suit, she is competent),” Malik wrote.
Another user on X, Iqra, too, criticised Maryam Nawaz and wrote, “Punjab Minister Maryam Nawaz wearing Indian designer dress Sabyasachi on nephew’s Nikkah. Being a minister, does it suit her for wearing Indian dress whom relations are we all known. When we prefer moral integrity!! Disappointed”.
Some Pakistanis demanded accountability from the CM for wearing a suit worth lakhs while the poverty in Punjab deepened.
A person named Sundus Naseem, in a post on X, called the looks “straight outta Madame Tussauds”—only she didn’t seriously mean it.
“Who needs austerity when you can spend millions on couture and call it ‘public service’?” she added.
