Climate crisis on our doorstep, and a conman may have sparked honour killings in Afghanistan.

Chinese Communist Party has detained missing Interpol president

The Interpol president resigned from his post as the chief of the international police force even as his detention in China continued to be surrounded by mystery.

The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) announced in an online post Monday that it had detained Meng Hongwei, The New York Times reports.

The order, posted by the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection, CCP’s watchdog for ‘political disloyalty’, said Meng was under investigation for “violating the law” and was “under the supervision” of an anti-corruption watchdog tied to the party.

A few hours later, Interpol said it had received Meng’s resignation “with immediate effect”.

The statement of his detention and his subsequent stepping down comes a day after Interpol demanded answers from the Chinese government on the whereabouts of Meng, who was reported missing Thursday.

Meng’s wife told police in France, where Interpol is based, that she had last heard from him 10 days ago and had recently received threats via social networks and by telephone, according to the statement by the French interior ministry.

Thailand cave boys get rousing welcome during friendly in Argentina

The twelve Thai boys and football coach rescued from a flooded cave in a dramatic rescue operation earlier this year participated in a high-profile friendly at the River Plate’s iconic Monumental stadium in the Argentinian capital of Buenos Aires Sunday.

They were attending the event as honoured guests at the Youth Olympics that Argentina is hosting, reports Reuters.

The team known as ‘Wild Boars’ faced River’s under-13 team. The friendly match ended on a 3-3 score.

Severe climate crisis may kick in as early as 2040, predicts UN panel

A report from the United Nations panel on climate change, issued Monday, describes a world of worsening food shortages and wildfires, and a mass die-off of coral reefs as soon as 2040, The New York Times reports.

The report “is quite a shock, and quite concerning”, said Bill Hare, an author of previous IPCC reports and a physicist with Climate Analytics, a nonprofit.

The report was authored by 91 scientists from 40 countries who analysed more than 6,000 scientific studies.

The authors of the report warned that if greenhouse gas emissions continued at the current rate, the atmosphere could warm up by as much as 2.7 degrees Fahrenheit, which would deepen the risk of droughts and poverty.

The report said that, to meet this goal, greenhouse pollution should reduce by 45 per cent from 2010 levels by 2030, and 100 per cent by 2050.

A conman in Afghanistan may have triggered honour killings

A conman in Afghanistan is on the run after allegedly raping several women on the pretext of ridding them of conception-related problems, reports The New York Times.

He reportedly filmed the sexual encounters and then used the footage to extort money from the women, a modus operandi that is said to have sparked a wave of honour killings in the conservative country.

Areas Rasool Landay is said to have visited have already reported deaths of many women, triggering suspicions that they might be linked.

With Landey’s crimes becoming public, there is a demand for his execution.
