New Delhi: There is something in the air in the United Arab Emirates: a foul smell. Across the country and in Dubai, people have reported an unusual smell in the air, leading authorities to investigate its source. Local media reports say that some residents have said that the smell is similar to fuel or gas.

On 20 October, the UAE’s Ministry of Climate Change and Environment said that it was working with the local authorities to identify the natural source of the unusual smell in the air.

In one statement, the ministry said that in its initial assessments it had found no signs of concern and officials were continuing field inspections and taking steps to reduce the smell and help it disperse.

“Response efforts and field monitoring remain ongoing to reduce the odours and accelerate their dissipation. No indications of concern,” the ministry said.

It added that it would inform the public if further developments required precautionary measures and urged residents to follow updates through official channels.

Authorities had received complaints about unusual odours in Sharjah and neighbouring cities on 19 October. Lieutenant General Abdullah Mubarak bin Amer, commander-in-chief of Sharjah Police, informed about the complaints.

He assured residents that the situation was safe and stable and that there was no indication of a threat. He also said that federal and local authorities were investigating the matter and would share updates as more information became available.

However, the exact cause of the smell has not yet been established.

The reports have also drawn attention on social media, where residents have shared their experiences and raised questions about what could be causing the odour.

“How has nobody figured out what the constant smells are? Smells like petrol all over town tonight,” posted an X user.

“All I can smell is fuel in Downtown Dubai today… What’s going on,” said another.

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
