New Delhi: New York City mayor Zohran Mamdani’s city-owned grocery stores have been labelled a “socialist trap” by Republicans. Now, a widely shared clip from the NYC mayor’s press briefing has given his critics more ammunition.
On 27 July, Mamdani announced that five city-owned stores would offer a 30 per cent discount on key grocery items. The proposal accounts for one store per borough, and at least one will likely open by 2027. It was instantly dismissed by many in the US as unrealistic, and one that could hurt small businesses.
A key concern was that people could buy items at a lower price and sell them at a higher cost elsewhere. When a reporter at the press briefing asked Mamdani how he planned to address the issue, the mayor only affirmed his promise to New Yorkers.
“The programme is for New Yorkers to be able to put food on the table—not a programme for people to be able to make a quick buck through reselling,” he said, passing the mic to an official from New York City Economic Development Corporation.
Now, her response to the reporter is going viral on X.
“We’re looking to make sure that we target New Yorkers, whether it be a sort of library card-esque thing, and we also manage who’s buying, so that it’s focused on everyday New Yorkers,” the official said.

The potential ID or membership-based system, Right-wing handles on X argue, clashes with Democrats’ arguments against voter ID laws. The comments on Musk’s post were filled with memes.
Comparisons with voter ID
Republican Nancy Mace, a US Representative from South Carolina, argued along the same lines.
“Zohran Mamdani wants you to show an ID to shop at his city’s grocery store, but GOD FORBID we require proof of ID to vote,” she posted Monday (IST).
The Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, proposed by US President Donald Trump, would require proof of citizenship to register to vote in federal elections. Democrats argue that a photo ID disproportionately impacts Black, Native, elderly, and student voters, and remains an ineffective tool to curb voter fraud.
Many accounts claim that the city-owned stores would require photo ID, though the claim is not supported by official information.
