New Delhi: Zerodha co-founder and CEO Nithin Kamath’s company anniversary celebrations have caught social media attention. Kamath was seen singing on stage while a Bengaluru-based band named Lagori performed live at the event.
Kamath wasn’t alone. He was joined by his team members during the celebrations. Kamath shared a video of the performance on X, writing that he was “still crooning” after the event.
“Yesterday night, we had @lagorimusic play at our 16th anniversary, and the band was mad! Still crooning!” Kamath wrote in the post.
The retail brokerage platform Zerodha was founded in August 2010 by brothers Nithin and Nikhil Kamath. The company introduced a low-cost discount broking model in India and later came into the limelight as a major financial technology company that grew without external venture capital funding.
The name Zerodha combines zero and rodha, a Sanskrit word meaning barrier. The company has aimed to reduce the cost, complexity, and technology-related barriers that Indians face while investing.
“Over 1.6+ crore clients place billions of orders every year through our powerful ecosystem of investment platforms, contributing over 15 percent of all Indian retail trading volumes,” the Zerodha website reads.
Posting a nostalgic message on X, Nithin said — “16 years back, today, when we started off.”
From Zerodha to ‘WTF’
While Nithin leads Zerodha, his younger brother and co-founder Nikhil Kamath has also made a name for himself in the world of podcasts.
He hosts “WTF is with Nikhil Kamath”, where WTF stands for “What the Finance”. While the show began with a focus on finance, it has expanded beyond the subject to cover technology, social media, gaming and startups.
In 2023, the podcast ranked sixth among Spotify’s podcasts in India, with clips from the show also going viral on social media.
Over the years, the podcast has featured a range of guests, from actors-turned-entrepreneurs such as Suniel Shetty to investors, CEOs and personalities including Bryan Johnson.
The entrepreneur also hosted Prime Minister Narendra Modi for a two-hour-long episode, marking the PM’s first-ever podcast appearance.
In the podcast, Kamath had expressed his nervousness about interviewing the PM.
“I am sitting here in front of you and talking; I feel nervous. It’s a tough conversation for me.”
PM Modi acknowledged his nervousness with a smile and replied: “It is my first podcast. I don’t know how it will go with your audience.”
