New Delhi: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has deferred the launch of his book at Gauhati University, which was scheduled for 7 September.
The release of his book, based on his doctoral thesis titled Integrated Development – The Role of the North Eastern Region, was scheduled to be conducted by Vice President Radhakrishnan.
In a post on X, Sarma wrote that after learning that a book on the life and legacy of Hazarika was also scheduled to be launched at the event, he requested the university authorities to defer his book’s release.
“Today belongs to Bhupen Da. My book can wait for another day,” he posted.
Sarma steps aside for Hazarika tribute
Known as the ‘Bard of the Brahmaputra’, Hazarika was a legendary Indian playback singer, lyricist, musician, poet and filmmaker from Assam. A Bharat Ratna awardee, Hazarika died in 2011 and remains one of the state’s most prominent cultural figures. His music, often rooted in Assamese folk traditions, addressed themes of humanism, social justice and universal brotherhood.
The year 2026 marks Hazarika’s birth centenary, with events being held to commemorate his life and contribution to Indian music and culture.

VP Radhakrishnan at Gauhati University
At the event, Vice President Radhakrishnan laid the foundation stone for the ₹110-crore Infrastructure Development Project at Gauhati University.
He also released two books: Dr Bhupen Hazarika: 100 Years of a Wandering Song and the expanded fifth edition of Chandrakanta Abhidan, published by the university.
Sarma’s decision to defer his book launch drew praise from some users on social media.
“A graceful gesture. Knowing when to step aside so another legacy can have its moment says as much about leadership as taking the stage. Bhupen Da deserves the spotlight today,” one user wrote on X.
Another commented: “A nice gesture from our Mama.”
