Mexico has a Batman. He got tired of waiting for police to arrive

Luis Cardenas, a Mexican journalist, posted pictures of the alleged thieves on  X, which showed that the men had the Spanish word for thief, ‘ratero’ written on their faces.

New Delhi: The streets of Lagos de Moreno in the Jalisco state of Mexico have a vigilante on the loose. He is called the Batman of Lagos de Moreno. The police are looking to arrest him because he duct-taped alleged motorbike thieves to lampposts.

As per the reports, more than five men were found taped to the street poles since June 13. They were tied for longer than 10 days. The Mexican Batman also left their allegedly stolen automobiles next to them to show people what crimes they had to be punished for. Luis Cardenas, a Mexican journalist, posted pictures of the alleged thieves on  X, which showed that the men had the Spanish word for thief, ‘ratero’ written on their faces. And they also had mustaches and cat whiskers.

“In Jalisco, after the lack of help from the authorities, an anonymous hero started hunting down motorcycle thieves. So far, he’s already taken down five in ten days, and they call him the ‘Batman of Lagos de Moreno’,” wrote Cardenas. The local man going around catching thieves is reportedly acting out of necessity since the spike in motorbike thefts and the alleged police inaction.

Hero fighting against crime

In one of the pictures, two men can be seen tied back to back and a message written on pink paper is pasted above them on the pole. These messages are reportedly details of the alleged crime committed by the men. The police reportedly treated the men for their injuries and looking for the vigilante. This particular information is making people upset who are rooting for the Mexican Batman. “Send me a link to his go fund me. I can’t have a hero like that buying his own duct tape!” one user wrote on Reddit.

As per The Sun, this is happening right after female vigilantes started carrying assault rifles in the nearby state of Michocoan to protect themselves from the Jalisco New Generation cartel. The English publication used “bloodthirsty” to introduce the cartel. According to the Council on Foreign Relations’ Global Conflict Tracker, Mexico reports more than 30,000 crime-related deaths each year. Most of these are homicides by organised crime groups.

“The group of women warriors have built a homemade tank and roadblocks to help fend off Jalisco gunmen, who are responsible for a surge in homicides in the region,” the report read.

What’s also interesting is that Mexico’s security chief Omar Hamid García Harfuch was also given the ‘Batman’ tag in 2025. Harfuch is known for fighting off cartels and surviving an assassination attempt.
