(Reuters) -Hurricane Lee will likely remain a large and dangerous cyclone when it closes in on southeastern New England late Friday before moving over Maine and Atlantic Canada during the weekend, the U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC) said late on Wednesday.
Hurricane and tropical storm watches have been issued for much of coastal New England and portions of Atlantic Canada, the Miami-based forecaster said, with southeastern Massachusetts also under storm surge watch.
Lee, located about 920 miles (1,480 km) south of Nantucket, Massachusetts, was moving generally northward and packing maximum sustained winds of 105 mph (165 kph), with an increase in forward speed expected through Friday.
On Thursday, the center of Lee was expected to bring heavy rainfall and high surf as it passes west of Bermuda, which has a tropical storm warning in effect, the NHC added.
