New Delhi: A song from Zubeen Garg’s last Assamese film Roi Roi Binale was released on YouTube by its makers on Tuesday. Titled Mur Mon, the song, which talks of love and heartbreak, is part of the movie set to release on 31 October. The lyrics and music are also given by Garg. Meanwhile, the Assamese icon has also been paid tributes from across the border in Pakistan. They chose Ya Ali to remember the iconic singer who died on 19 September.

“Today, I feel both overjoyed and in deep pain that I had the honour of singing this song. I urge everyone to shower their love on this film, and also unite to demand for justice,” commented singer and Garg’s close associate Sweety Das. She was referring to the ongoing CBI investigation into Garg’s death in Singapore.

Zubeen Garg, known for singing more than 38,000 songs in 40 languages, was also a prominent figure behind the revival of Assamese commercial cinema. He inspired a character in the biopic Bhaimon Da, which highlighted five decades of the film industry’s journey. Garg’s last role was in the 2024 action-thriller Sikaar, where he played a tea garden union leader.

‘From Karachi with love’

Pakistani pop-rock band Khudgharz, during a recent performance in Karachi, performed Zubeen Garg’s iconic track Ya Ali from Gangster (2006). Sharing a clip of the show on Instagram, the band wrote, “From Karachi with love, Zubeen Garg, you’ll always remain a part of our playlists. Thank you.”

The video shows the crowd fully immersed in the performance, singing along as the band members re-create the number that had won Garg the Stardust Award for New Musical Sensation (Male) in 2007.

The clip has garnered over half a million views on Instagram, with hundreds of comments appreciating the gesture by the band across the border.

Assamese fans of the singer, in particular, wrote messages, thanking the Pakistani band for the tribute.

“Love from Assam, Joi Zubeen da,” wrote one user, while another said, “On behalf of all my fellow natives of Assam ….we are extremely overwhelmed and thank you from the core of our heart for such a lovely tribute to the comrade and soul of Assam, our Zubeen da.”
